What is APEL?
APEL stands for Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning. It is defined as a systematic process that involves the identification, documentation and assessment of prior experiential learning, such as knowledge, skills, and attitudes to determine the extent to which an individual has achieved the desired learning outcomes, as access to a program of study and / or award of credit. Generally, the process involves assessing APEL-based learning experiences, including any that have not been previously assessed or awarded credit.
This learning may be acquired through formal, informal and non-formal methods, including formal schooling, life and work experience, training, independent study, volunteer work, hobbies and family experiences.
When can it be used?
Candidates wishing to further their studies at UTM but do not possess the minimum academic requirement as stipulated in the programme, may appeal for entry using APEL. APEL will be used as an alternative entry requirement to UTM’s programmes at the level of Masters.

What is the requirement to further study in UTM with APEL?
Masters Degree Program
- Candidates must be at least 30 years old in the year of application,
- Have at least STPM / diploma / equivalent as approved by UTM Senate with at least 5 years relevant work experience.
- Candidates are required to pass a competency test, specific knowledge test and personal skill (portfolio and interview) conducted by UTM Razak School.

A. Competency Test
The competency test consist of three sections as listed below.
- Quantitative competency
The test will assess candidates based on the Diploma / Equivalent syllabus. The areas include Algebraic Expressions and Formulae, Linear Equations and Inequalities, Area and Volume, Mathematical Reasoning, Problem Solving
- English Communication Skills
The comprehension texts are technically-biased in nature, and questions are pegged at Malaysian University English Test (MUET) Band 3 level.
- Computer Competency
The test will assess candidates based on Word processing skills, Spreadsheet skills, Presentation software skills, Internet Access and Electronic Communication, Internet search and database search.
B. Specific Knowledge
This assessment is formulated to assess a candidate’s readiness and basic knowledge in the specific area of study to be undertaken.
Executive Master In Occupational Safety & Health Management
The test will assess candidates’ basic knowledge in OSH Legislation, Hazard & Risk Management and Safety Engineering.
Master of Science (Engineering Business Management)
The test will assess candidates’s basic knowledge in relation to Engineering Management and Business Management
C. Personal skills
The Personal skills involve submission of a portfolio and interview which will be conducted at UTM Razak School. The portfolio consists of formal, informal and non-formal learning experience. The evidence can be presented based on non-formal learning experience such as seminars, training courses attended andjob scope: and informal learning experience such as participation in community activities, appointments in committees and public speaking.
Fees
Candidates are required to pay RM200 to sit for the APEL.
